Dog Days of Summer - A Short & Sweet August 2022 Update 🙂

Hello! ^_^

It's been a while. I took a much-needed mental break to take a step back and look at how things were going inside and see what I could tweak to help me move forward as both a DIY artist and as a person.

In the meantime, I got to go to NYC for the first time in June (the food was so delicious -- I can't wait to go back), slogged through work, and checked in with a health coach concerning my mental game in July, went to an Emo Night event (super fun, 10/10 would do again), and started working on finishing my next song (Shadows) that I'm hoping to release in late September-to-early October.

To Mix or Not To Mix -- DIY Perspective

I've been putting in a lot of work the past few weeks to apply myself to mixing my music. After my first single, I almost decided to outsource this to save me some time, but after further thought, it made more sense for me to continue working at the craft.

I read quite a few perspectives on the topic and while I'd love to focus on just making the music, it makes more sense at the moment for me to continue to learn the craft.

  • Not to mention, if I have a really popular song that should be remixed and remastered for release later, I can still make that happen when the time is right.

Next Song -- Shadows

I'm excited about this song!

I showed it to my (unofficial) Music Production Mentor and he was very complimenting of the mix vs the first song I consulted with him on. There were a few things he pointed out for me to work on, but I'm super happy I have someone I can reach out to for feedback on how to make the track better.

For the last couple of weeks, I've been working on editing the vocals. This has been a whole new process for me and I wish I was one of those folks that had perfect voice pitch so I didn't have to edit so much 😂 I certainly had a few moments where I was feeling insecure but this is actually more normal across the music industry and even excellent voices still have to have vocal edits in the final production work.

  • Retrospective here: In my first release, I threw some AutoTune on my track mainly for the aesthetic effect and I honestly didn't think I needed to do any heavy editing after that -- hindsight is 20/20 and while my first recording doesn't bug me, I'm definitely taking a more hands-on approach like I am for this song for future tracks.

That's All for Now

Thanks for taking a moment to read this! I'm happy to finally make my first post again after a few months of being off the radar. My hope moving forward is that I'm establishing excellent tiny habits now to curve burnout and empower myself to continue documenting myself moving forward despite not having the answers or foresight to know for sure what's going to happen next....however, all that matters is that I'm taking proactive steps now to be where I want to be.

Sending good vibes to you all and I hope y'all have a fantastic rest of the summer!
